Hello to all. My name is Christine. I am having a partial nephrectomy (and possibly a total nephrectomy) on October 6. I am nervous as heck. Has anyone had this procedure? How was your recovery?

It's completely natural to feel nervous before surgery, and reaching out to connect with others who have been through similar experiences shows real strength. Many community members have shared their recovery journeys after nephrectomy procedures, and hearing from those who understand firsthand can provide valuable insight and comfort during this time. Consider sharing any specific concerns about the recovery process, as this caring community often has helpful perspectives on managing post-surgery healing and what to expect in the weeks ahead.

Hi Christine, I had a right nephrectomy over 17 yrs ago due to cancer. I did not have to do any chemo or radiation. I have had CKD 3A. However, all of my numbers have been in normal range the few years. So, it's possible to reverse the chronic kidney disease and be healthy. Best of luck to you. May your surgeon have steady hands and fast healing.

Hi Maureen. Thank you so much for your reply. This mass was 1st noticed in 2023 during a CT Scan for a lower back issue; however, no one said anything to me about it. At that time, it was 1.2 cm. In April, 2025 I was in the ER due to urinating a lot of blood. They ran another CT Scan at the E R. The mass had grown to 2.4 cm. As of yesterday, it is now 3.4 cm. My urologist told me it was slow growing, but it seems to me that's a pretty fast growth. How large was your mass? How will my urologist know if it has spread beyond my kidney? Sorry for all the questions. I'm just trying to get as much information as possible. I battled breast cancer in 2020. I won that battle. This time, I'm much more nervous though.

I too had kidney cancer. When they did the Pet-Scan for the breast and bone cancer they found a mass on my kidney. The treaty thing was I had a cyst there since I was a child. Now of a sudden a mass unrelated to the breast cancer. So I went to the Urologist and did surgery. He took 20% of the kidney. It turned out that the mass(tumor) was benign and the cyst was cancer. No radiation or chemo. That was a yr. ago . If it wasn’t for the other crap I’m going through l’d been fine. U’re going to be fine. Write anytime be well Mary
