Does Insurance Cover Mastectomy Recovery Items?

Does anyone know if insurance pays for all the apparatus we need after a mastectomy? As in the pillow, shirts, etc. I would like to get a handful of items before my surgery to be as comfortable as possible. If that is even possible. Thank you!

Insurance coverage for post-mastectomy items varies significantly between plans, though many do cover certain medical necessities like compression garments and prosthetics when prescribed by your healthcare team. It's worth checking with both your insurance provider and your surgical team about what's covered, as they can often provide guidance on which items might qualify and help with any needed documentation for reimbursement.

Some things may qualify as durable medical equipment. You can try submitting invoices/receipts as out of network expenses to your insurance but it all depends on your coverage! Call and ask first.

I found a size above your normal size tank top works best for chemo given through a port. Button up shirt over as well. I bought those with my own funds, no insurance coverage.

I bought all my mastectomy items on Amazon with own money. After surgery, Medicare pays for more- bras, prosthetics, compression bras.

You will need larger shirts, to go over your head with bandages, button up shirts and gowns

The mastectomy pillows, shower and bath sponges, fanny packs to hold drains, all very important!
