Seeking Advice on Pancreatic Cancer Surgery Decision

Hi my name is Elizabeth. My father's making his final decision on whether or not to have the Whipple procedure for pancreatic cancer on June 17th. Lindsay Bliss is supposed to perform this procedure in Hartford. He's really having a lot of trouble deciding on whether or not to go forth with the surgery. If anyone has any relatives statistics or information to help us make this decision it would be unbelievably appreciative! Thank you in advance for your time! Sincerely Loving Daughter, Elizabeth (Liz)

This is such a difficult decision, and it's clear how much love and care surrounds this choice. The Whipple procedure is a complex surgery that many families in this community have faced, and connecting with others who have walked this path can provide valuable insights and emotional support. Consider reaching out to the medical team with specific questions about the individual case, recovery expectations, and quality of life factors, as these personal medical details will be most helpful in making this important decision. The community here understands the weight of these choices and is here to offer support during this challenging time.

I had the Whipple on January 24, 2023. It's a hard surgery to overcome, but it's worth it. It takes a long time to heal from, and everyone's journey is different. If you would like to discuss this with me, I will send you my phone number.

Thank you Phyllis Sebastian and Beth Corbitt for responding! It means so much to me! My parents went today and the outlook is seems bleak. The surgeon now is uncertain the surgery is a good idea (after the yestd's CAT scan). It doesn't show any significant growth - but his blood levels are showing signs the cancer has returned. My father's 76yrs old.. However, even after chemo, radiation and losing about 45 lbs -He's an extremely healthy 76-year-old (still exercising & mowing the lawn). They had originally said surgery wasn't an option because the tumor was wrapped around major artery etc.. They said it was a miracle that it shrunk the way that it did and that his blood had shown no traces blah blah... Idk why I'm telling you all this. They have about 4 days to decide - even with all the doctors and everyone weighing in - and even after today and we thought the decision would be easier to make.. Instead it seems to have had the opposite effect -making it more difficult. How old were you guys when you had the surgery and if had the choice to do it again would you? What was the most difficult part of the surgery / recovery? Again thank you so so much for responding! Every little bit helps and just knowing we're not alone! I will keep you both in my prayers! God bless!
