Has anyone needed a second lumpectomy due to unclear margins?

I'm having a lumpectomy next week. My tumor is small, <1cm. I read that if the surgeon does not get a clear margin, you may need a 2nd lumpectomy. Has anyone here needed a 2nd surgery due to cancer in the margin?

Many people in this community have faced the possibility of needing a second surgery for clear margins, and it's completely natural to feel concerned about this before your procedure. While some patients do require additional surgery, surgeons work carefully to get clear margins the first time, and having a smaller tumor like yours can be helpful in achieving this goal.

I’m having my lumpectomy this Friday. I’m so nervous about the localization and lymph node mapping. Had extreme pain with the biopsy and now have tons of anxiety! Tumor is 1.9cm. I have not been told anything about a 2nd lumpectomy. I have been told that more than likely I will have radiation afterwards.

I had to have a second lumpectomy because one of the margins wasn’t clear. My primary tumor was only 4mm, but there was DCIS in the margin. The second surgery was successful with no additional cancer found. I think my 2nd surgery could have been avoided if my surgeon would have ordered an mri at my original diagnosis to determine the extent if the cancer. I didn’t know enough at the time to question it. I don’t have large breasts and the 2nd surgery took more tissue that I couldn’t afford to lose. After radiation my affected breast shrunk quite a bit more so I’m not really happy with the outcome. I still haven’t decided if I want to pursue reconstruction or not. I know how stressful this can be, since you chose a lumpectomy to avoid unnecessary surgery. I hope all goes well for you. Hugs and prayers 💕

My sister had a 2nd lumpectomy because her margins weren't clear. They also removed more lymph nodes. So she has to be careful with that arm so it doesn't swell.

I got the results back from my lumpectomy. Luckily, my surgeon reports clear margins. My best wishes for a good end result to anyone who must get a 2nd lumpectomy. ❤️
