Bilateral mastectomy is scheduled for January 4th. I planned on having tissue expanders and implants, but now I'm strongly considering DIEP. Opinions? Help!

This is such an important decision to consider carefully, and it's completely understandable to have second thoughts as your surgery date approaches. Both DIEP flap reconstruction and implant-based reconstruction have their own benefits and considerations - DIEP uses your own tissue for a more natural feel and appearance, while implants may involve a shorter initial surgery and recovery time. Many people in this community have experience with both options and can share their perspectives on factors like recovery time, results, and long-term satisfaction to help inform your decision-making process with your surgical team.

I had DIEP. It was successful and yielded very natural looking results. DIEP is harder to go through at the time of the surgery but, in my opinion, yields the most natural outcome. There is no foreign substance in your body. That said, I have friends that got implants and are happy with the results.

I hope this message finds you in good spirits, and a successful surgery. I too had a bilateral mastectomy, lymph node biopsy, and placement of expanders on December 20, 2023. I decided to go with the DIEP Flap because I didn’t want to have to worry about silicone or saline leakage,or having to replace them(they do need to be replaced at some point), I’m 57. My drains were removed a little too soon, so the next phase of filling the expanders has been delayed. Twice so far the doctor has dad to drain the fluid from my breast area with a needle and syringe.Hopefully next week the filling of the expanders will begin. Everyone’s journey is a little different. It can be difficult to decide. I pray that you are able to make the best decision for You. Wishing you well, and a whole and speedy recovery!🙏🏾💕
