Will I Ever Get Used to My Breast Implants After Mastectomy?

I had a double mastectomy. Then reconstruction. The expanders were miserable and I thought the softer implants were supposed to feel better. I’m still miserable! They feel like I have weights on my chest with tight rubber bands around them. Will I ever get used to them? How long??

The adjustment period after breast reconstruction can vary significantly from person to person, and many find that comfort levels gradually improve over several months as the body continues to heal and adapt. It's encouraging to connect with others in this community who have navigated similar experiences, as they often share valuable insights about their recovery timeline and what helped them find relief.

I had a double mastectomy and expanders 5 years ago…like you, before the implants. Reality is they are never going to be perfect. I massages them a-lot with cocoa butter and coconut oils to soften them up. The stretched skin also took time to adjust. Be patient with the process but proactive. If your surgery was recent its best to massage them as much as possible so they become more pliable and softer. I had difficulty touching them at first but I think I grew accustomed to them…5 years later I will likely have a corrective procedure to remove some skin folds on the cleavage area which is common. I used Palmers line of cocoa oils and butters they were wonderful and smell great too! Good luck!

I had a double mastectomy going on 4 years ago. I did not have reconstruction or implants. I didn’t want the hassle of worry about them. I don’t regret it. And I don’t miss the girls.

I had partial mastectomy and reduction on the other side. So much tightness underneath both breasts and a lot of pain in tumor bed removal area and another spot on that breast that always hurts. It feels like I have a terrible tight bra on and I massaged the areas and moved around well after surgery. It's so frustrating to feel so bad months afterwards.

I had a right breast mastectomy and have the expander, it is filed with saline and yes it like carry a bowling ball around. And why do I feel like a band around my chest, is it part of expanded? I am praying the final implant (haven’t decided if I will do saline or silicone ones) but either one will not be this uncomfortable

I had a bilateral mastectomy 6 years ago. The tightness does get better over time but doesn’t disappear completely. I shopped all kinds of bra types and hated most options. I finally went to soma and bought one with no underwires. It is soft and double lined( it holds removable pads in the space between). I sized up two sizes so that it fits loose. I remove pads for shirts that aren’t clingy but put them in if the shirt is more tailored. That is because I had nipple sparing procedure which cosmetically I love, but the nipples are always erect and the pads cover them so they aren’t visible to the world. I didn’t realize that happens but found out that it does ( the hard way). Hang in there!

Hi Tanya, I had the nipple sparing procedure too, I was wondering if the my nipples would alway look erect, I guess so, thank you for the heads up on that. I will have to check out Soma for a bra.
