Should I delay radiation after thyroidectomy if I have no symptoms?

I have undergone a full thyroidectomy and a sternectomy. A new lump has shown up on my latest image. Dr wants to surgically remove this one also. Then start radiation treatment for the first time. I have yet to feel any symptoms from either of my tumors. I just stumbled upon them on a CT scan. They said I had it maybe 5 yrs or more due to the size of it. I've read about side affects of radiation and im hesitant to start that journey. Maybe I should just leave this new growth alone and give myself another 5 yrs before I agree to radiation treatment??

This decision requires careful discussion with your medical team, as they understand the specific details of your case and can weigh the potential benefits and risks based on your individual situation. Many people in this community have faced similar difficult decisions about treatment timing, especially when feeling well, and it's completely understandable to have concerns about radiation side effects. Consider asking your doctor about factors like the growth rate of the new lump, staging details, and what waiting might mean for your long-term outcomes - this information can help you make the most informed choice for your unique circumstances.

It depends on the type of cancer. I was diagnosed with an aggressive ductal carcinoma in my parotid gland which had migrated to facial nerves and neck lymph nodes. I did radiation after surgery. If I waited five years I would be dead. Radiation side effects have been brutal, but I'm dealing with it because I want to continue living. I'll never feel normal but am enjoying most activities I did before cancer. So far after a couple of years,no cancer has returned. Without the radiation this would not be happening. Discuss the options with your Dr.

Thank u Marcelle for ur positive response. 2nd surgery went well. Doc removed nodule and lymph nodes. 5/6 came back as metastatic papillary and 1 poorly differentiated. This makes my cancer more treatable now. So now to decide which radiation treatment to try. Waiting on docs to lead the way.
