Has anyone gotten insurance to cover resensation nerve grafting after mastectomy...

I am scheduled for a double mastectomy in early October. My plastic surgeon offers the resensation procedure (nerve grafting for the nipples). Unfortunately, United Healthcare has denied coverage even after the peer to peer and appeal by my pastic surgeon. Has anyone had United Healthcare (or any insurance) cover the resensation procedure during the mastectomy? If yes, I'd love to know how you were able to get it covered. https://www.resensation.com/ if you are curious about this procedure. I find it frustrating that a procedure to have our anatomy actually have nerve sensation after a mastectomy is denied and deemed unnecessary. Thank you!

Fighting for insurance coverage for procedures that can restore sensation after mastectomy is unfortunately a common challenge many patients face. While some members have had success with different insurance companies by working closely with their surgical teams to demonstrate medical necessity and quality of life benefits, each case tends to be unique depending on the specific policy and documentation provided. Consider asking your plastic surgeon's office if they've had success with specific coding or documentation approaches for United Healthcare, and connecting with other patients who've navigated similar coverage battles might provide helpful strategies to explore.

Hi Karey! This is an important part of reconstruction in my opinion and insurance needs to do better. Does your plastic surgeon’s office have any insights or experiences with getting it covered? 💛 Suzanne (Community Moderator)

I need to ask again because her nurse said that occasionally she has seen it covered but not sure it's UHC.
