Concerns About Future Cancer After Breast Radiation Treatment

Hi everyone, I just completed radiation after an IDC diagnosis and lumpectomy on my left breast. It was a tough decision to start radiation, because part of me still thinks double mastectomy and reconstruction would have been the way to go (my breasts are highly dense and even on an mri both breasts look "cloudy"). Im worried my next mammo will show more cancer (I started Tamoxifen in May and it's supposed to descrease density eventually)... Sorry if that's not really a question. Just wondering what my options will be if I do have a recurrence or new cancer.

The anxiety about future scans and potential recurrence is incredibly common after completing treatment. Many patients find it helpful to discuss their specific surveillance plan and what options would be available in different scenarios with their oncology team, as this can provide some peace of mind about having a clear path forward. The support of others who understand these concerns can also make a significant difference during this challenging time.

You can still choose mastectomy and reconstruction if needed down the road. The fact that you’ve had radiation makes reconstruction more difficult but not impossible.
