Struggling After a Difficult Radical Prostatectomy

Hello. Well, Monday July 7th I had the Radical Prostatectomy. And unfortunately it went very badly. Just as my surgeon was preparing to remove the prostate, he cut through my rectum requiring an emergency Ileostomy. I was able to come home on Friday July 11. Besides being in pain I’m extremely sad. As of now I will have an Ostomy for at least the rest of this year. I won’t even learn the results of the lymph nodes biopsies until next week or the week following. I also have to keep the Foley Catheter for at least 2 weeks and a drain tube and bulb for an undetermined time. Here at home my wife has been wonderful but we have absolutely no physical support from others though everyone always says, “If there’s anything that you need “! I’ve was up all night and today doing repairs that must be done , ie repair a section of fence because our Shih Tzu who is deaf and nearly blind, escaped on Monday because we weren’t home and he was having separation anxiety. He nearly was hit by a speeding truck on our little 20mph street. Luckily a neighbor 6 houses down found him on her front porch at 11pm. We have 4 other dogs 1 being my service dog that were out in the heat for 18 hours without water or food because my wife was only supposed to be gone for 5 hours and home by 11 am. Again, no one ever helps us. Now I have to figure out how I am going to be able to dig up our front yard to repair a water line leak that we are responsible for not the water company. We are 67 and 65 on SS and every penny we make pays our mortgage bills and food. And now more medical bills as I lost my Medicaid when I turned 67 last month. I could go on and on but it doesn’t help anyone to listen (read)!

Recovering from surgical complications while managing multiple challenges at home takes incredible strength, and it's completely understandable to feel overwhelmed and sad during this difficult time. The community here knows that the physical and emotional recovery after prostate surgery can be especially tough when unexpected complications arise, and many have found that reaching out during the hardest moments - like this one - can provide much-needed support and practical advice from others who truly understand what you're going through.

I suppose the promise of “If there is anything I can do” usually translates into “There is really nothing I can do for you” and the offers become less frequent and people fade away. Pretty normal. Sadly, only extraordinary family or friends will come through. People have busy lives, and time and money are stretched.

Where do you live? I too have a service dog and am battling the big "C" but I would help and my husband has a strong back! I have adult children as well that are always looking for things to do. Maybe we can help of we are close?

I wish there was something I could do to help you and your wife. Fighting cancer is hard enough without having to worry about other things. I'm praying for you both.

Are you a veteran? Maybe contact the veteran's office. How about senior services?
