6 months agoRosa, I hope you do well! I had a single mastectomy without immediate reconstruction. I stayed in hospital over night. My recovery was smooth. I am 68 and active. I wore my compression bra for several weeks. It actually felt good. I had one drain in for about 10 days. It was mildly uncomfortable but I even could sleep in that side. I only took Tylenol for a few days. I had a camisole with a pocket to put drain in. I did cook and freeze multiple dinners before hand. I could get in and out of bed, use the bathroom and dress myself. Take it slow and easy. I napped every day. Everyone’s recovery is different and I wish you well. Feel free to ask any questions.

6 months agoLike Janice, I had a single mastectomy and also stayed overnight at the hospital. I had a lot of pain during the overnight stay, but they gave me oxy and painkillers through an IV. Luckily, the pain wasn't as bad after I was discharged, and I only took tylenol for a few days. The attached drain was annoying, and you had to clean it a few times a day. I was ecstatic when they removed it after 13 days. Using a compression bra for a few weeks was helpful. I used a wedge pillow for about 6 weeks; it really helped with getting in/out of bed. I didn't lift anything over 5 pounds, and really took things slow. I made sure to eat enough protein to help with the healing and also walked around as much as I could, while taking multiple naps a day. I'm fortunate that my recovery was relatively smooth. I hope yours will be too, stay positive!

6 months agoHi Nina. Glad to hear things went relatively smooth. Did you have reconstruction? How are you handling asymmetry? Supposed to have single mastectomy this week. Thanks.

6 months agoHi, Wendy, thank you. I really debated reconstruction since I'm in my late 30s, but I decided that I didn't want to subject myself to additional pain, so I opted to go flat and wear a prosthesis. I'm content with my choice and the option is still available if I wanted reconstruction (I spoke with a plastic surgeon prior to my surgery to be aware of the options). The physical aspect of being asymmetrical can be "fixed" with a prosthesis, but the emotional aspect can take time. I hope you have a smooth recovery! Remember to eat protein and get enough rest!
