a month agoI have been diagnosed with DCIS stage 0 breast cancer on July 2nd. I had a lumpectomy on July 31st. I had a second and third lumpectomy and I still don’t have a 2mm clear margin. This is so stressful. What do I do next? Another lumpectomy? Go straight to radiation? I have considered mastectomy, however, I also have MS so I am immune compromised. Chance of infection is high. Has anyone ever had 4 or more re-excursions surgeries? After 3 what should I do next? Thank you, Michelle

25 days agoThis sounds incredibly overwhelming, and it's completely understandable to feel stressed while navigating these difficult decisions. Having multiple surgeries without achieving clear margins creates a challenging situation where several treatment paths may be possible. Many community members have faced similar crossroads with repeat surgeries and have found it helpful to discuss all available options thoroughly with their oncology team, including the risks and benefits of additional surgery versus other approaches, especially when other health conditions are part of the picture. Consider seeking a second opinion if that would provide additional clarity and peace of mind during this stressful time.

8 days agoMichelle you are not alone I also have MS and breast cancer I had a lumectomy and I don't have a clear mardin either when I was faced with another lumpectomy all I could say was I wanted the whole breast removed but after calming down and letting the investigation nurse examine things age 62 luck (-) Ms since 2003 and the high risk factor of something going wrong like lymphedema I decided to go ahead with another lumpectomy and breast reconstruction surgery on 11/03 and u right stress from this diagnosis is horrible I need a vacation after this so I can just exhale 😮💨

7 days agoGood gracious Michelle. How have you managed to stay sane and coherent through 3 unsuccessful procedures? I would seek a 2nd opinion and probably a new surgeon.

6 days agoI was diagnosed with DCIS 8 yogi and got a second opinion and the doctor explained that DCIS is like taking a paint brush full of paint and flicking it towards a wall, the splatter pattern is just like the particles of DCIS scattered in the breast tissue. You can imagine how difficult that can be for a surgeon to get a 2mm margin around all Sid’s of a “splatter”. It took 2tries for me and the second time it was still marginal and I just went with it and then did radiation therapy. Now 8 years later after 7 years of clean mammograms, I just got a scan/biopsy that came back with invasive cancer. The answer is you never know what the future holds you just have to decide what will work best for you and and deal with whatever comes along.
