Pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is a rare, slow-growing cancer that usually starts as a tumor in the appendix. It spreads throughout the abdomen, releasing mucin-producing cells that create a thick, gelatinous mucus, earning it the nickname "jelly belly". Another surgery than chemo yuck

Surgery is often the preferred treatment for PMP because this type of cancer tends to be less responsive to chemotherapy, and the thick mucus it produces can be physically removed more effectively through surgical procedures like cytoreductive surgery combined with heated intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). The surgical approach allows doctors to directly address the gelatinous deposits throughout the abdomen, which can provide better long-term outcomes for this unique type of cancer than systemic chemotherapy alone.
