Was Your Double Mastectomy Outpatient? And What About Pain After?

My doctor said my double mastectomy would be outpatient. Was yours? She also said that 30% of patients have post mastectomy pain syndrome which is usually a lifelong struggle. Have any of you dealt with that condition?

These are really important questions to consider as you prepare for surgery. Many patients do have outpatient double mastectomies, though the approach can vary based on individual medical factors and hospital policies. Post-mastectomy pain syndrome is indeed something that affects some patients, and connecting with others who have experienced similar challenges can provide valuable insights and support. I’m 3 weeks out yesterday. No pain for me. Other than the tape they used to hold the drains in. Apparently, I’m allergic to the adhesive. They removed it and used tegaderm.

Did you have to stay overnight in the hospital?

I did only because they used nitro paste on one side and my blood pressure tanked. Otherwise, they would’ve sent me home.

Hi, Karen, I had a single mastectomy and stayed overnight at the hospital. They considered it "outpatient" though because the stay was less than 24hrs.

Karen, I actually have post mastectomy pain syndrome from partial mastectomy/ reduction on other for symmetry. I did not know what it was or informed it was possible. Both my surgeons talked to me as if the surgery was nothing.I thought I would breeze through like other surgeries I have had. I have had several surgeries with minimal pain after any of them. I'm glad your doctor is informing you and acknowledged it happens. I truly believe every patient no matter what breast cancer surgery is being done should see a physical therapist before surgery. An oncology physical therapist if possible. FYI. There are doctors who do nerve preservation and repair at the time of surgery. I wish I had been informed....The past year has been horrible, and I'm a very strong person. Stop and think....breast cancer is not usually emergency, make sure you have the right care

Double mastectomy here 8/15/24. Went home same day. No issues. Pain was manageable with what they gave me. Good luck in your journey!
