I was wondering if anyone has had a fat transplant surgery because their implants failed after their double mastectomy? If so, did it workout, the cost and recovery time, please. I’ve been quoted $60,000 and insurance will not cover.

This sounds like a challenging situation to navigate, especially with such a significant financial investment and no insurance coverage. Fat transfer procedures after mastectomy can vary widely in outcomes and experiences from person to person. Hopefully some community members who have been through similar reconstructive options will share their experiences with costs, recovery, and results to help with this important decision. Consider discussing all available reconstruction options with a plastic surgeon who specializes in post-mastectomy procedures to ensure the best approach for your specific situation.

My doctor says fat transplants to the breast donot exist. However I am finding out they do. Told it is quite painful & a long recovery. I know that my body will reject implants. After looking into this issue found a procedure called oconoplastic surgery. This is a good option for those who can not have implants. Be sure the doctor is well experienced. If it is Medically necessary to remove your implants, then the insurance should cover it.

Also told it is ok to do a fat trans for a small dimple or empty space, but to fill in most of the breast it is not such a good thing. However since my doctor said it is not done period, I can not talk to him about it. If you decide to do this… keep us informed. I know of no doctor here that does it.

I just had a double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction with fat from my love handles on 3/5/25.. I have to admit I have never known such pain or felt so bad and I'm at 3 weeks post op today. I spent a week in the ICU due to blood loss and they were unable to get my B/P above 70/30 even with 3 meds to bring it up. I am a RN and knew it wouldn't be easy but no one could have prepared me for this 3 weeks and I still have one of four drain, and the pain is excruciating. Then I find out my pathology came back metastatic breast cancer after having negative MRIs, a PET scan of my entire body and A CT of both breasts and lymph nodes the week before surgery all showing no cancer. Does this really happen or is my pathology wrong??

Oh wow Joy. Sounds like a tough few weeks. Sorry you’re going through that. Are the Mets in the lymph nodes? Micromets?

Suzy, Shame on your doctor for blowing you off. He is absolutely incorrect. I don’t know where you live or if he is a cancer specialist, but he sounds like my old doctors when I had a different insurance carrier. You are your best advocate!!!
