Experience with Double Mastectomy and Flap Reconstruction

Looking for feedback on those that have done double mastectomy with flaps I think that’s what it’s called. My breast surgeon said that since I’ve lost 65lbs recently that I may be able to take the extra skin from my stomach and reconstruct my breast. I’m leaning that way since the women in my family have had reactions to implants.

Flap reconstruction using tissue from your abdomen (often called DIEP or TRAM flap) can be a great option, especially when there are concerns about implant reactions. Many community members have shared positive experiences with this type of reconstruction, appreciating the natural feel and the added benefit of a tummy tuck effect. It would be wonderful to hear from others who have gone through this procedure to share their recovery experiences and outcomes.

If you have the flap, you will end up with no waist and organs pushed up above the new bellybutton.

I had a mastectomy and a flap reconstruction. It looks and feels very natural. I also had to have my nipple removed and had a medical tattoo to replace my nipple. All look very natural and I am extremely happy with the results. I went through a lot at the time of the reconstruction, but I would do it again. The results are worth it

Dawn and Martha, can you explain a little more about the changes in your waist and organs?

What do you mean by no waist?

My plastic surgeon gave me that option too but recovery is longer. If you can and have the time, I say go for it! I’m having skin necrosis issues now
