Port pain! Has anybody experienced any port pain? I have been experiencing pain on the third day of the port being placed not at the site, but in the middle of my chest towards my throat right in the dip where my collarbones are. When I take a deep breath or exhale completely or try to burp or laugh I feel pain a sharp shooting pain with pressure like gas is trapped in my chest. Sometimes when I bend over,or sit upright it doesn't come up. It's sporadic. Has anybody experienced that? I had a chest x-ray done and a CT scan done that day. I was supposed to have my first chemo session, but they paused it because of my discomfort. Everything came back fine but I don't know why I'm experiencing this? Is it my mind manifesting something or anxiety/panic?

Port discomfort can happen for various reasons, and it's completely understandable to have concerns about any changes or pain you're experiencing. While some mild soreness around the port site can be normal, especially after use or if it's newly placed, persistent or worsening pain should definitely be discussed with your healthcare team who can properly evaluate what might be causing it and determine if any treatment is needed.

I had all these same symptoms with my port. I told 3 doctors about it and they said it was just part of it. I think when the surgeon carves out that little spot for the port it disturbs neighboring nerves and muscles nearby. The nurse also said the surgeon has to put your arm in a strange uncomfortable position to accomplish the surgery. This too pulled on all the muscles. I know exactly what you’re talking about. I had all of it for probably 10 days but it has all gone away. My port hurt too when I lay on my side to sleep. You’re not alone!

So sorry you are experiencing discomfort. The chest area is sensitive. I had the double mastectomies as advised and initially clean lymph nodes and margins, but triple negative IDC and BRCA 2, was very aggressive and I spread to a node nearly a year later, requiring chemo and radiation. I am very thin chested and my port obviously was a bit tender and literally pouched out of my chest, but easily visible for accessing. Accessing the port is also a little painful as expected. I had to be careful because of my small anatomy. I am sorry this led to treatment delays for you. I had peripheral arm sticks for 3 weeks, until my port was placed because of the urgency and aggressive cancer. I was able to have the port removed in about 8 months, following treatment completion and when my diseased nodes, now cancer free, were removed. Best wishes and prayers.

Ice pack wrapped in a light weight towel. I use it all day and all night since getting my port on 3/10. Last night was the first time I didn’t ice. It feels ok today. The ice packs REALLY help.

Mine was uncomfortable but not really painful. The oncologist prescribed a cream with lidocaine and suggested I put it on the port and hour before treatment. Don't rub it in but do cover it with a piece of plastic to protect your clothing. The sticks for blood and chemo didn't hurt at all.

Thank you all for the pointers. The pain has subsided. Now I just deal with gas 🙄

Oh Lordy all kinds of weird stuff pops up as we go down this road. 🙏🏼 my port hurt the most near my collarbone. The actual port site was always very warm. But as I said the ice packs really helped.

I was diagnosed February 10, 2026 with invasive ductal carcinoma. Triple negative breast cancer had surgery partial mastectomy March 19. My port will be put in tomorrow April 1. I have read so much comments and it helped me to better understand or answers for the unknown and everyone experience but I’m just going trusting the process with Faith. I really appreciate this platform where we can share experiences even though everyone experiences are different but just trust God and fear not thank you guys.

Our problems are similar as I required double mastectomies and full chemo, radiation a year later. I inherited BRCA 2 aggressiveness with IDC, triple negative, and only lacked immunotherapy because of autoimmune disorders being a reason to avoid that avenue of care. Initially my margins and nodes were clean, but I still spread a year later, requiring the treatment journey. I wish you the very best. Stay active and positive. 🙏
