I was dx with melanoma vulvar cancer a few months ago. Went through 2 immunotherapy rounds and on my mri of pelvis nothing has changed. It hasn’t gotten worse but hasn’t gotten better. I am now meeting with an oncology surgeon to have a radical vulvarectomy. Have any of you had similar experience and how did you not feel like a freak post surgery?

Facing major surgery like this brings up so many valid concerns about body image and self-acceptance afterward. Many people in this community have walked similar paths and found ways to rebuild confidence and maintain healthy relationships with their bodies post-surgery. Consider connecting with others here who may have similar experiences, and don't hesitate to ask your care team about resources for emotional support during recovery - you deserve all the help available to navigate this challenging time.

Hi Lori I underwent a modified vulvarectomy in May. It is definitely a change in appearance. I still have difficulty with it, but I am thankful that the cancer was removed. I believe in time I will accept the body changes. I don’t feel like a freak, just know that I am different now. At age 60, I am use to having all my parts. Lol. I was offered reconstructive surgery and declined. Surgery was tough and recovery was not as fast as I would have liked, I am nearing the end of my chemo/radiation treatments and I am glad!! I will most likely seek counseling when I am healed to help deal with all the challenges facing me.

I'm scheduled for the same thing on 10/6. Watching your post. Best of luck.

Kelly one thing that I want to tell you is to wait the 6 weeks healing before you think that it is going to look like that permanently. There is a lot of swelling and stitches. I am also going to start a body image support group in a couple of days. I’ll let you know how that goes.

But did you feel like you should've gone home then? Were you good at home? Any home health care?

I felt ok going home. Still a little groggy. No home health care. I had family take care of me. But up walking from the very beginning. Watch climbing stairs.
