What could a new breast lump mean after DCIS treatment?

My now 71 yr old mom had Hormone estrogen/prog + DCIS stage zero in 2023 in right breast, lumpectomy clear and on aromatose. First /second year great all clear, 2026 new mamo shows something on left breast. Shes going next week for another mam/and ultrasound. Im trying to stay positive for her but i worry so much if it is something we will navigate but does anyone have insight like could it possibly just be a cyst or something benign or something similar to DCIS again?? Im just scared its something more and need peace of mind that it can just be nothing and they overreact since she is a previous Cancer survivor.

It's completely understandable to feel worried about a new finding, especially after a previous cancer diagnosis. The good news is that many breast changes detected on mammograms turn out to be benign conditions like cysts, fibroadenomas, or other non-cancerous tissue changes. Healthcare teams do tend to be extra vigilant with cancer survivors, which means thorough follow-up but also means catching any issues early if they do exist. The upcoming mammogram and ultrasound will provide much clearer information, and many community members here have experienced similar scares that turned out to be nothing serious.

Hi A K, I understand why you would be worried. I wouldn't focus energy on thinking about it until the results from the ultrasound are in. I am about 14 months post-mastectomy, and my last mammogram was fine, but when I went to see my breast surgeon 2 months later for a follow up, she ordered an ultrasound because she felt something dense/nodular. When I finally got the ultrasound 2.5 weeks later, it turned out to be nothing. I was glad that I didnt spend the 2.5 weeks worrying. I hope it will be the same with your mom!

Thanks Nina! Just got a little discouraged because it’s only been barely 2 years and she’s on hormone blockers and for them to see something on the other breast made me worry. They weren’t very descriptive so when she goes next week she goes straight to her oncologist for her to compare. Hope it’s nothing too! ❤️

Update! Moms ultrasound came back fine just a shadow and they were being extra cautious since she has history! The unknown is always scary! Happy that she is still ok!

Glad to hear all was fine. The advice not to worry was the best advice, hope you took heed to it during the waiting period!
