14 days agoI have been diagnosed with ER+PR HER2 breast cancer. I have undergone 7 months of chemotherapy, which made me very sick for the entire time-I ended up in the hospital 3 times because of side affects. I then had a mastectomy with 10 lymph nodes also taken. I will be starting radiation soon. The oncologist recommended hormone therapy for 5 to 10 years. I am 74 years old and I don’t want to spend the rest of my life dealing with side effects and so have told my oncologist I don’t want to take the hormone blockers. As you might guess he is not happy with my decision. Do any of you you know anyone who has done this and continued with their life? Or have you declined the medication

14 days agoHi Patti, Was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008 with chemo. Mastectomy. Herceptian was suppose to be for a year . And was suppose to take tamxifen for 10 yrs. I had to stop herceptian due to my heart function, And I stopped the tamxifen after 6 yrs. A different breast cancer came back in 2020. I m currently on aromasin. And I refused radiation. Mine is on left side Heart function already compromised I plan on continuing aromasin.and deal with side effects. Daily. Sending strength your way.

14 days agoI am 59 and decided not to take the blockers. I choose a double mastectomy and 15 days of hypofractionated radiation. My surgeon was fine with my decision. Of course oncology wasn’t. I felt like I was just put in a study for the drugs.

14 days agoThis is such a challenging decision that many face after going through intensive cancer treatment. Quality of life considerations are deeply personal, and it's completely understandable to weigh the potential benefits against concerns about ongoing side effects, especially after experiencing such difficult effects during chemotherapy. Many community members have found it helpful to discuss their concerns about hormone therapy side effects with their care team, explore different medication options that might be better tolerated, or seek second opinions to feel more confident in their treatment decisions.

7 hours agoCheryl I too will be going through chemo soon and I know it's gonna be rough but try to connect with support groups, church members, coworkers, family, friends, or neighbors that have gone through this for support. I reached out to a former colleague & she gave me tips for chemo. Not sure they will work but at least I have them. Chemo affects everyone differently, tell your oncologist and hopefully the symptoms lessen with each treatment. I was told to be sure to stay well hydrated & drink plenty of water with electrolytes so the chemo can leave my body quickly. This journey is not easy, hang in there!!
