What radiation options did you choose after lumpectomy for stage 0 breast cancer...

I recently had a lumpectomy for stage 0 breast cancer and am now looking at radiation options. My doctor explained three choices: whole breast radiation (which treats the entire breast), accelerated partial breast irradiation or APBI (which focuses on just the area where cancer was removed), or potentially skipping radiation entirely since I'm over 50 with a small, low-grade tumor and clear margins. I'm trying to understand what each option might mean for my daily life and recovery. If you've been in a similar situation with stage 0 breast cancer after lumpectomy, I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience. • What type of radiation did you choose and how did it fit into your routine? • What factors helped you make your decision between the different radiation options?

Making radiation decisions after lumpectomy can feel overwhelming, and it's completely understandable to want to hear from others who've walked this path. Many community members have shared experiences with whole breast radiation, APBI, and active surveillance approaches - each person's choice often depends on their lifestyle, work schedule, distance to treatment centers, and comfort level with different risk profiles. Hopefully others in similar situations will share their decision-making process and how their chosen treatment fit into their daily routines.

I had the exact same diagnosis in 2025 with a lumpectomy. To help me decide I had the DCISionRT test which was just slightly elevated so I decided to opt for APBI 5 sessions. It was easy with no issues. I am Letrozole which is another story.

I had a lumpectomy 1/2025, followed by full breast radiation. I had 2 very small areas 1 stage 0 and 1 stage 1. 1 lymph node removed that was negative and all margins were clear. I had 15 radiation treatments, 5 days a week for 3 consecutive weeks. Each treatment lasted less than 10 minutes and can fit into most people’s schedule. Other than a red sunburn rash which didn’t appear until the last few days and lasted less about 2 weeks, I had no negative side effects. I chose the full breast radiation for my piece of mind. Now I am taking Anastrozole for at least 5 years.

I was right on the line of needing/not needing radiation. I had a full dmx and a low oncotype score. I really debated for a while and ultimately chose to have the radiation. Mine was the full area and under the arm where I had one micro met in a lymph node. I had 6 weeks of radiation and it really wasn’t too bad. I had some tiredness and my skin got red and sore at the very end. Glad I did it. I just wanted to feel like I had done everything I could. But each person is different and while this is my experience, you really have to think about how it will fit in your life. My mom also had a stage 0 dcis and had the lumpectomy and the radiation as well. I think she only had 4 weeks .
