Has anyone been told they can’t eat sushi while on chemo?

Many people going through chemotherapy do receive guidance about avoiding raw fish and sushi due to potential food safety concerns during treatment when the immune system may be compromised. It's definitely worth checking with your oncology team about their specific recommendations for your situation, as guidelines can vary based on individual treatment plans and current blood counts.

“Since people with cancer often have compromised immune systems, consider skipping foods that carry the risk of foodborne illnesses, including: Lightly cooked or raw fish, such as sushi.”

Handling raw meat is also discouraged, so I tell my husband has to step it up and prepare the meat for dinner. Salad bars are something to stay away from too. I said it’s kind of like being pregnant again with all the stuff they want you to avoid.
