Does anyone know if once you get clear margins for DCIS lumpectomy and get treatment what is the percentage of recurrence. Like before recurrence is a possibility wouldn’t every 6 month scan and blood tests you get catch it before it can become invasive?

DCIS recurrence rates after lumpectomy with clear margins and treatment are generally low, typically ranging from 10-20% over 10-20 years, with most recurrences being non-invasive. Regular monitoring through imaging and follow-up appointments does help with early detection, though the specific surveillance schedule varies based on individual factors that oncologists consider when creating personalized follow-up plans.

My team did a test to determine what the reoccurrence % was. Ask your doc

I had a lumpectomy and two follow up surgeries to make sure the margins were clear. I then had 16 radiation treatments. From what I have read and heard from cancer specialists on podcasts (sorry can’t think if the name), from what I understand, the risk of reoccurrence is less than 5% in the first 10 years and less after that. Of course mammograms and/or MRI’s every 6 months to monitor.

Get the onco test to find out what your recurrence chances are

After my first diagnosis with BC in 2010 (stage 3, ER/PR +, HERS-) I had yearly mammograms and breast MRI’s. 7 1/2 years later found metastasis on my sternum. Followed by a PET scan discovered Mets to my hips, ribs and pelvis. Thus in June 2018 was diagnosed stage IV. Pretty scary but glad I had yearly scans as I might have never known about my Mets. No pain or discomfort whatsoever 🤷‍♀️ now in July 2024, still here after numerous different treatments, unfortunately on my last available treatment option. Then it’s palliative care till the end. Get those yearly scans done, it can save your life !!
