My Medical Oncologist is wanting me to start 2 infusions a year of ZOLEDRONIC ACID. I have osteopenia. I already take 1200 mg of Calcium daily. THE possible SIDE EFFECTS that she mentioned are awful. Can anyone speak to this medication and how it’s going???

Understanding concerns about potential side effects for any new treatment is completely natural, especially when managing health after a breast cancer diagnosis. Many community members have shared experiences with bone-strengthening medications, and connecting with others who've navigated similar decisions can provide valuable insights and support during this treatment consideration.

Hi Karen I have been on Zometa for 3 yrs. Not sure about anyone else but the drug was effective and I don't have any issues with it. Good luck with whatever you decide🙂

Hi Karen, I like Laurie started the Zoledronic acid infusions for my osteopenia. Felt a littke achy and flu like for couple days but that was all. Lots of water for hydration ahead if time and I took Tylenol and Zyrtec couple days before the infusion. Recommended by other patients and I think helped immensely. Take care.

Thank you cherie. I have been on zomato for the year. No side effects to speak of. Thanks for your tip on Tylenol prior to the infusion.

Hi Karen, I have been on Zometa for 4 years. I do have some achy and flu like symptoms also for about 4-5 days. A little 8 hour Tylenol works great for a few days. I have infusions every 3 months. It has been very effective for me. I am stage lV metastatic breast cancer that spread to my bones. My last PET scan showed no evidence of any tumors for the first time in 4 years. My bones look good.

Karen very similar issue. Doctors ( endocrine/oncology) said because my osteopenia has been stable I could wait a year after taking meds and repeat bone scan. Could then do Zometa if needed at that time.

Please get dental clearance before you start Zometa. Osteonecrosis of the jaw is a rare but serious side effect .

Have been taking Zometa for 4 years with no side effects whatsoever. If you read the side effects of most drugs, even paracetamol, they are frightening

I had my lower teeth removed at Southwestren dental school in Dallas. Other dentist referred me to them. Love them. My teeth were bad to begin with, but got worse with the Letrozole and Zometa treatments. i’m now feeling better. Sacrifices made for the treatment. Now I’m wondering if cancer spread to my ovaries. I had to go 4 months without the Letrozole because of job and insurance changes. What doctor checks your ovaries?

Hi Pat. I have seen a gynecologist who specializes in oncology. My BRCA2 gene mutation increases my risk for breast and ovarian CA. Good plan to check.
