What can help with vaginal irritation while taking Anastrozole?

I have been on Anastrazole for 1 year for my ER/PR breast cancer and have been having issues with vaginal irritation / itching. I do use Halogyn suppository gel three times a week per my gynecologist for moisture but it doesn't seem to help much. It's been pretty bad for a couple of weeks so I've tried monistat and some cream that you get at the pharmacy with no benefit and now my gynecologist has left the practice and I can't get in to see another one till August. Has anyone had this type of situation and has there been anything that you've used to help? Thank you

Vaginal irritation is a common side effect many experience with aromatase inhibitors like Anastrozole, and it can be really frustrating when current treatments aren't providing relief. While waiting for your gynecology appointment, consider discussing this with your oncologist as they often have experience managing these medication-related side effects and may be able to suggest additional approaches or coordinate care. Many in this community have faced similar challenges, so hopefully others will share what has worked for them.

Following as I have noticed this side effect as well. Let us know if you find anything out. I plan on asking my medical oncologist at my next appointment.

On Letrozole. My medical oncologist told me to use Revaree suppositories twice a week. No hormones in them. It has helped.

Thanks Mary, I am currently using Halogyn gel inserts 3 times a week. I will talk to him to see if there is a difference.

Check with your oncologist about estradiol cream as it has been proven to be effective and if used properly does not circulate throughout the body.

Hi, I was previously on Tamoxifen, and for the past year and a half I’ve been taking Anastrozole. I experienced the same issue until my gynecologist recommended using coconut oil along with estradiol vaginal cream twice a week (1 g per application). Since starting this routine, I’ve had significant relief from the itching and irritation. My current protocol is to apply organic, unrefined coconut oil every morning after showering, and to use estradiol cream on Thursday and Sunday nights before bed. Because my cancer was ER/PR-positive and HER2-negative, I was initially concerned about using estradiol. However, both my gynecologist and oncologist reassured me that the effect is very localized and does not pose a significant risk. I feel very good with this approach.

Thanks Marija, I just bought some unrefined organic coconut oil and was told that even though my cancer was ER/PR I could use the Estradiol 1-2 times a week so I will try your regimen. Maybe a weird question but do you just use the coconut oil externally because the irritation seems to be internal too?

I use it externally and internally too.

And if you go the estradiol/local hormone route, ask for the tablet form, not the goo. Much more user friendly :)

I use Lubracil tablets. I do not notice any dryness or itching and my last gyn appointment was good.

I've been on Letrozole for almost a year now and have the same issue. Just saw a new OB/GYN the other day and she suggested Replens long lasting gel consistently 3x a week. Started last night 🤞🤞
