a year agoI was to go in on 12/10 to meet with my oncologist. There is a test they are running on either the tumor or lymph node to find out the recurrence of cancer. I wasn’t aware they could test for that. My cancer is ER and HER2 positive and progesterone negative. I wasn’t aware to start chemo around the first of the year. I put a request out to see if that’s postponed. Anyone else familiar with a test that can determine its recurrence? Ty

Yes, there are several tests that can help predict cancer recurrence risk, and these genomic tests have become an important part of treatment planning for many breast cancer patients. These tests analyze the tumor tissue to provide information about how likely the cancer is to return and can help guide decisions about additional treatments like chemotherapy. It's completely understandable to feel surprised about learning of these tests - many patients aren't aware of them until their oncologist brings them up. The results can provide valuable information for both you and your medical team as you make decisions about your treatment plan moving forward.

7 months agoAm not sure reoccurrence can be tested…. But there are predictors such a Residual Cancer Burden, Nottingham Scale, LVI ant the hormone receptors…. However, they re predictors…. Not definitive. Doctors try not to overwhelmed us with information…. We have to drag it out of them. Write you question down before each visit & don’t be shy to ask way.

7 months agoSo I talked to my breast cancer care coordinator after I posted. She said that the oncologist is trying to determine if chemotherapy would be helpful for me. So she had a “oncotype” test ran on my specimen. If the score is 25 or higher then it’s likely chemo would benefit me. The score measures the likelihood of recurrence. The more likely cancer is to recur, then chemo would be more beneficial. I was told they run this test to make sure that chemo would be helpful.

7 months agoHi Patti - I’m new on this platform and yours is the third post I’ve read but I am a huge fan of aforementioned test and actually am a “patient advocate” for the company who offers it (exact sciences). I am in no way a paid endorser or anything - just a patient who had the test done on my tumor and marvels at the capabilities of testing and science these days! I had no idea this “stuff” existed 5 years ago (the good old days!). Anyway, big fan of the test and happy to share what I know if you want any input!?! It was scary not to get chemo (in a weird way) but I watched my sister go through it two years before me and I saw no need if it wasn’t going to help me. Just my opinion on the matter - everyone needs to make their own choices but that was my perspective on my situation.
