3 years agoI just finished chemo! I’m curious how long others kept their port? I know I will be having blood work every month for the next year so I am considering keeping it for a while. Thoughts?

Congratulations on completing chemo - what a significant milestone! Port timing decisions vary widely among patients, with some keeping them for several months to a year for ongoing monitoring, while others prefer removal sooner. Many find that having regular blood draws does make the decision easier, though factors like infection risk and personal comfort also play important roles. It would be great to hear from others in the community about their experiences and what helped them decide on timing.

6 months agoSimilar to you I have to get blood work done every month as part of the protocol for being in a clinical trial. I plan to keep it in for the next 2 years until the trial requirement ends. My team sees no issue. I get it flushed monthly after my blood draw.

6 months agoI have a port as well and done chemo since September 2022. I get mine flushed every 4 months at the oncology clinic. CT, bone scan techs nor phlebotomists use my port unfortunately so it's not getting use. I've asked and many keep it for years safely. I'm going to keep mine for now as it doesn't bother me and figure I'd just jinx myself if I had it removed. The one small scar and insertion was enough 😜

6 months agoMy doctor recommended 2 years. I have Stage 1 IDC breast cancer, triple negative. Lumpectomy done in October and radiation done in January. I have had a recurrence of cancer cells in my cervix, so I am now doing chemo
