I've been given Tamoxifen and I'm TERRIFIED to take it. Has anyone had a good experience with it? Because everything I hear reads like an a horror story.

It's completely understandable to feel anxious about starting a new medication, especially when online searches can highlight concerning side effects. Many people in this community have shared positive experiences with tamoxifen, finding that their side effects were manageable or minimal, and it's worth remembering that people are more likely to post about problems than positive experiences. Consider discussing your specific concerns with your oncologist, who can help weigh the benefits for your particular situation and discuss strategies to manage any potential side effects.

I feel the same way. I was prescribed in December but just decided to start taking it yesterday. If I start having the side effects I've read about then I'll stop taking it. Right now my plan is to take it until my next mammogram in May. Then I will reassess ... unless the side effects start.

I am in the same place currently. Torn between taking the Tamoxifen and its side effects. Trying to read all the information I can find and searching this app for what others have experienced and expressed. This has been the absolute worst part of my diagnosis and treatment in terms of being stressful for me.

I took tamoxifen for 5 years. Went off to have a baby. Then back on for 4 1/2 more. No side effects. I hope the same for you ❤️ kept things stable for 13 years.

I was just prescribed it. I am almost 57 and still haven't hit menopause. Oncologist is hoping this will help as chemo has been delayed for other reasons. Drugs.com is a great resource to check - Mr. Google can scare you unnecessarily.

I have been on tamo for 1.5 years. I’m not sure if my symptoms are/were all tamo or stopping my birth control pills as my periods have been out of control w severe cramping and bleeding. And I started tamo and stopped bc pills close to the same time. My DCIS was ER/PR positive. I was 48 yo. I finally went for a consult for a hysterectomy and had the procedure on 12/26. Recovery was very easy for me. Procedure was on Thursday I was finished w pain meds by Saturday. Drove myself to two doctor appts on Monday. Back at work 1/2/2025. This was not difficult for me at all and I feel so much better. Before all this I did move my tamo dose to before bed. This helped me w the headaches. I met w a new medical oncologist about a week ago and I’m staying on the tamo. I understand your concern over symptoms but you need to lower your cancer risk. You need meds to do that. My recommendation would be take the med and see how you respond. Often times symptoms improve over time. Be honest w your doctors if you can’t tolerate the symptoms and see what options you have.

I haven’t had any side effects at all and I lost 10lbs. I was so scared too but ended up being nothing. I’ve been on it 6 months now.

Any medication can have side effects but Tamoxifen offers benefits for preventative measures to those with hormone positive cancers. I unfortunately have a BRCA triple negative cancer that needs more aggressive therapy. Best wishes.

I ve been on Tamo since September. I take it in the mornings because I thought it was aggravating my insomnia. I have hot flashes that I now use Black Cohash to stop. No other issues.

I started taking tamoxifen in November. The only side effects that I have had is the night sweats. I ale my Tamoxifen at 830pm before I go to sleep. I have changed my diet and I am exercising and drinking a lot of water. Sometimes I don’t have any night sweats. I am 57 and when I went through menopause I didn’t really have any symptoms. I am on tamoxifen instead of aromatase because I have joint pain. But now that I changed my diet my joint pain is gone! So I worry because I do not have side effect that bad that the drug is not working.
