How to Inform Local Clinic About Seeking Treatment Elsewhere?

I have had challenges getting care in the Seattle area. I am diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Carcinoma with ER+/PR+/HER2- in one tumor, ER+/PR-/HER2-, third tumor could not be biopsied with ultrasound waiting for MRI-guided biopsy for 3rd tumor. I reached out to three different well regarded cancer institutes. Two are in the USA and one in a well regarded country with exceptional breast cancer survival outcomes. The two in the US will take some time to establish care etc. The one abroad can move to surgery in the next 1.5 weeks. I will need follow up care when I return. I don't want o burn any bridges with the clinic closest to me in particular. How do I let them know I am opting to start care someplace else? Thank you

Being proactive about your care while maintaining good relationships with local providers shows thoughtful planning. Most healthcare professionals understand that patients sometimes need to seek specialized care elsewhere, especially when timing is critical. A straightforward, honest conversation with your local clinic explaining that you've found an opportunity for more immediate care abroad, while emphasizing your intention to return for follow-up care, typically helps preserve those important relationships for your ongoing treatment needs.

I am also in the Seattle area. Plenty of breast cancer to go around, I doubt they will even bat an eye. I’m so thankful for you that you found care elsewhere that you feel comfortable with. I’d love to hear your experience as I am in the Swedish cog here in Seattle and have had the WORST experience!

Dear Caitlin, I'm so sorry to read that you too are having challenges with the level of care here. I simply do not understand why everything takes so long. Additionally, we did the math and would end up paying more if we stayed here with the 10% copay that is expected and not counting the deductible we already met. We have extended family in the medical field overseas who personally know the surgeons and hematologists involved with my needed surgery. This factor has made such a difference in the way they have treated me over the phone, and telehealth conversations. I recognize it should not be this way but alas I am too tired to keep fighting for care here. Additionally, if I stay in this area they are talking about surgery in late July or early August and I have been advocating for care since February. I will receive the surgery I need next week there. As we are told over and over time is of the essence. I simply cannot wait any longer. I will report back as you have requested.
