What should I know about treatment options for hormone-positive DCIS?

I was recently diagnosed with DCIS (stage 0 breast cancer) that is hormone-positive. My doctor explained that I have several surgical options to consider, including breast-conserving surgery with or without radiation, or mastectomy. Since my cancer is hormone-positive, there may also be endocrine therapy options to help reduce the risk of recurrence. I'm trying to learn more about what to expect as I work with my medical team to decide on the best treatment plan for my situation. I'd love to connect with others who have been through something similar. • If you had DCIS treatment, what factors helped you decide between surgical options? • What do you wish you had known when making treatment decisions for hormone-positive DCIS?

Finding the right treatment path for hormone-positive DCIS involves weighing many personal factors alongside medical recommendations, and it's wonderful that you're taking time to gather information and connect with others who understand this journey. This community has many members who have navigated similar decisions about surgical options and endocrine therapy, and their experiences and insights about what helped them feel confident in their choices could provide valuable perspective as you work with your medical team.

Went through something like this in 2024. My biopsy showed atypical lobular hyperplasia and i underwent a lumpectomy for that. Pathology then showed DCIS. ER +. PR +. At first i wanted bilateral mastectomies to prevent any recurrence. I did a lot of research on pubmed and found some evidence that if you get a recurrence or an invasive cancer after mastectomy, it will most likely be metastatic. I felt it was safer to keep my breasts and have regular mammograms. I had a month of radiation and have been on anastrozole since. If you have your pathology report, there is a very helpful website, memorial Sloan Kettering cancer center. They have a “calculator “ that can give you a prediction of your recurrence risk.

I was diagnosed with dcis stage 1b last year. I chose to just do a lumpectomy. I read several studies on a reoccurrence in the breast being caught sooner bc you still can get mammograms on a regular basis. I also made this decision bc I was 38 years old at the time of diagnosis, the cancer was not genetic, and my breast are large enough for a 2.5cm lump+margins to be removed without anything looking odd. I went thru 16 rounds of radiation. And am on tamoxifen for now. I’ve also changed to living a healthier lifestyle and stopped drinking to decrease the chance of a reoccurrence or to be as healthy as possible if it reoccurs again.
