Y90 treatment (radioembolization) is a targeted therapy option that some liver cancer patients explore with their medical teams. Many community members have shared their experiences with various liver cancer treatments, and connecting with others who've been through similar journeys can provide valuable insights and support. Consider discussing any questions about Y90 with the oncology team to understand how it might fit into the overall treatment plan, and feel free to share more about what specific aspects of the experience would be most helpful to learn about from others here.

I had Y90, microwave ablation and TACE. Y 90 went well. It was a 2 step process. First they map then a couple of weeks later they did the procedure. I was tired for about a week. Good luck to you and your husband

Jonna Bradley Y-90 (short for Yttrium-90) is a type of internal radiation therapy used to treat liver cancers. The full treatment is often called Y-90 radioembolization or Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT). Here’s how it works: • What it is: Tiny beads (called microspheres) are loaded with a radioactive substance called yttrium-90. • How it’s given: A doctor threads a catheter through the groin (femoral artery) or wrist (radial artery) into the hepatic artery, the main blood supply to the liver. The radioactive beads are then injected into the artery that feeds the liver tumor. • What it does: • The beads block blood flow to the tumor (like embolization). • At the same time, they deliver high-dose radiation directly to the tumor while sparing most of the surrounding healthy liver tissue. • The radiation only travels a few millimeters, so its effects are very localized. • When it’s used: • For patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) or metastatic cancer to the liver (like colorectal cancer spread). • Often used when surgery isn’t an option, or when other treatments like ablation or systemic chemotherapy aren’t enough. • Sometimes used as a bridge to liver transplant.

Hi, I had my y90 done this March 2025 and of course everyone's going to be a little different with their outcome/ symptoms. I believe two of the hardest things for me was the entry point the groin area in healing took some time. The other was pain in the chest area and having very hard bowels which took approximately 2 months to become normal again. I also had to manually assist removing them. I feel wonderful now with no pain and my tumor/ lesion size was a 5 cm. The radiation did Kill that tumor! On September 15th I will be doing the Angio Chemo-Embolization and will need to stay the night in the hospital to control the pain and nausea. Not looking forward to it but because I do have several other spots on the liver we want to prevent any spreading to other organs. Does your husband have any other spots?

I would like to know how someone that has done the TACE felt after receiving the treatment. I'm one that doesn't like sugarcoat and can deal with what I know. Thank you for any message you can offer!

Diagnosed November 2025 with liver cancer and cirrhosis of the liver Had my first treatment Y-90 January 20th. A little pain that is helped with oxycodone. Also have to keep up with lactose for constipation. Feel better than expected and my doctor said he is hoping these treatments will kill the tumor.

Hi! I was just diagnosed with HCC. I was scheduled for resection but a Snowstorm stopped me, and then I fell and my Surgeon cancelled the next surgery date! He has referred me to IR Y90 Treatment! I am not happy with how I am being treated.

To Gitta: I hope and pray it killed your tumor, too! 🙏 I have a 4.1 cm tumor in segment 4 and a 1 cm tumor in segment 3. I was scheduled for Resection of my left lobe, but a Snowstorm, and then I fell, went to ER, Surgeon found out and cancelled my surgery. He didn't think I could survive the recovery! Now, I am waiting on IR Y90 Treatment Dr to call me next week to schedule that. What are the side effects after Y90? Any pain? Nausea? Thanks...

I have had the mapping done and one round of y-90. The worst part is that you are semiconscious but not too much pain.
