How can I manage travel anxiety during cancer treatment?

What do you all do about traveling? We’re scheduled to go away for 2 weeks (visiting family/friends) and the whole prospect is seeming very daunting. Not so much the being there, but the getting there…the airports, the feeling that I’m going to have to be “on” all the time, not being near my medical team should I need something. On the other hand, if I don’t go (I also have a 19-year-old cat who’s not been well), my partner still will, so then I’ll pretty much be on my own for 2 weeks unless some of my friends could come out. (I moved out west from the east coast about 6 years ago so most of my support system is back east. Anyway, I’m very conflicted…I’d like to go but have lost my confidence. Suggestions?

Travel anxiety during cancer treatment is completely understandable, and many people in this community face similar concerns about being away from their medical team and managing energy levels while traveling. Consider discussing travel plans with your healthcare team beforehand - they can often provide guidance on managing symptoms while away and may suggest bringing extra medications or having contact information for medical facilities at your destination. The decision ultimately depends on what feels right for your current health situation and comfort level, and there's no wrong choice whether you decide to go or stay home with your cat.

If you are physically feeling good, go. Do not put your life on hold. I try to remind myself of this daily. It's very easy to become self-isolating with this disease.

Carol, I agree with Laura C. Go have fun. Pull out your cancer card if you need to. Traveling can be exhausting so don't be afraid to let them know if you need to rest. I got home from a 6 day cruise last week. I had fun, but also over did it. Had to take a long nap. Several years ago I took a 2+ month cross country car camping trip. My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time. My oncologist made sure I had enough meds to get me through. Live life!!

Do you have a trusted person to take care of your cat if you go? I have to ho to my nephew's wedding next month, & I feel similar. I just am not comfortable getting dressed up cause I just don't feel good.

No, I wound up not going. I was having some side effects from the new drug I was on and I just didn’t have the energy to manage such a hectic trip. Hoping to reschedule soon…fingers crossed!
