A first oncology appointment is usually a chance to meet the care team, go over medical history, and ask questions about next steps, though every team explains things a little differently. Many people find it helpful to bring a written list of questions, a notebook or phone for notes, and a trusted person for support. A few slow, steady breaths beforehand can also help ease nerves. Feeling hopeful and uncertain at the same time is common, and this community is a welcoming place to share how the visit goes or ask more questions about lung cancer care.

Lisa K — Good for you on a positive outlook. That’s half the battle. The other half is this: Question everything! Even from the most authoritative sources and knowledgeable experts. In my 3+ years of battling 29 harmful effects of treating high-risk prostate cancer with total lack of success, I’ve painfully learned that the American cancer-industrial system is poorly equipped to successfully address cancer. The primary lesson for patients is to question everything—especially your so-called “care” team—do your own research, and trust your own critical thinking and knowledge of what’s best for you.
