How do you cope when colon cancer becomes incurable?

I’m 62yo and was just told that my colon cancer has become incurable. Statistically I have 2 years, with treatment but the treatment will just prolong the inevitable. My husband and I are in shock and don’t know what to do. This is not what we expected 2 years ago when I was diagnosed with stage 3 CRC. I went through surgery and 6 months of chemo, which ended in 2 weeks in hospital on IV nutrition due to chemo toxicity. At that time they said I was likely cured. 9 months later I had a liver lesion (so now stage 4). I had that removed at the end of Jan 2026 but a new lesion 5 months later with evidence of more spread outside the liver. I’m devastated. I have an adult disabled son who lives with us. I can’t image leaving my husband and son alone. Alls I can do is cry.

Finding ways to cope with an incurable diagnosis often involves taking things one day at a time and focusing on what brings meaning and comfort during this difficult journey. Many people in similar situations find strength through connecting with others who understand, exploring palliative care options that prioritize quality of life, and having open conversations with loved ones about fears and wishes for the time ahead.
