Treatment options for DCIS typically include surgery, radiation therapy, and sometimes hormone therapy, depending on various factors that the surgeon will discuss during the appointment. This community has many members who have navigated similar decisions and can offer valuable insights about their experiences with different treatment paths.

Look at dcisoptions.org Also nccn.org has great patient guidelines I also had recent DCIS diagnosis. Take your time to look at options and make your decision. I wish I had realized earlier that this particular cancer is not an emergency and you can take your time safely. Trust your gut but also your surgeon. Do you have the ability to go to a cancer center?

Make sure you get an MRI to determine the extent of DCIS. My surgeon did a lumpectomy based on the biopsy and I ended up needing a 2nd surgery due to DCIS in one of the margins. I didn’t know enough at the time to ask for an MRI but my surgeon should have ordered one.

Call the American cancer society. They help so very much. Good luck and Godbless you.

I second the recommendation to get an MRI. I was diagnosed with DCIS grade 3. Because of my family history of breast cancer and that I have smaller breasts, a lumpectomy was not an option I was comfortable with. I opted for a bilateral mastectomy rather than just a single for the affected breast. The pathology results afterwards show that I chose the right option (for me) going with the mastectomy based on the margins. If I had done a lumpectomy, I would have possibly had to do a follow up lumpectomy.

I agree get an MRI. I was told I had the same DCIS. MRI showed a possible tumor. Surgery took the DCIS and what they thought may be a tumor. It was not clear even with the MRI. It was in fact a tumor and set me on a different treatment path. I am so glad they got it all with clear margins and no lymph node involvement. This lead me down a chemo and radiation path. All scary but at least the surgeon had all the information!

I had the biopsy and the MRI followed. Your doctor will probably be recommending one with and without contrast. From there you will have a better idea. Good luck

My doctor ordered an MRI before performing the surgery. They found two cysts in both breasts, so I had to reschedule the lumpectomy. A biopsy was done, which was negative, and after the lumpectomy, I was NED (no evidence of disease).
