DIEP reconstruction experiences can vary quite a bit from person to person, so connecting with others who've been through this procedure can provide valuable insights about recovery timelines, comfort levels, and what to expect. This community has many members who've navigated breast reconstruction surgeries and are often willing to share their journeys to help others make informed decisions.

6 months agoI had successful DIEP reconstruction. The end result is great. My reconstructed breast looks and feels like the original one. The process was painful, and the recovery period was more lengthy than with implants. Your stomach and breast area both have to heal with major incisions. On a long term basis, I believe the flap is more natural, warm to the touch and you have fewer complications. If I had to choose over again, I would still choose the DIEP flap. I was treated by a masterful surgeon at Stanford Hospital.

6 months agoI had DIEP flap reconstruction also. I don’t remember it, but when I first woke up I said to my surgeons, “Is it too late to change my mind?”. Then the next day I told my father, “I think I made a mistake.” My surgery was 11 hrs long and I was in the hospital for 5 days. Three of those in ICU. It was truly a difficult time, but each week I slowly got better. After a few months, I was over all the recovery and very happy with my decision. There are several parts to the recovery so learning all you can beforehand is the best thing you can do. And be mentally prepared for the recovery and you’ll do great.

6 months agoI too had diep flap reconstruction and already had a belly scar from 2 C-sections but it is much longer now, hip to hip. However, hospital stay was 5 days, 3 in ICU yet the only real pain I had was along my sternum and in the area where lymph nodes were removed. Turns out the take a part of your rib out so they can do the micro surgery to create the blood flow. Not sure about the lymph node post surgical pain. I still have discomfort in that area and use an arm sleeve which seems to help.
