Your guide for patients and families following a cancer diagnosis
August is National Make-A-Will Month, and in recognition of this important awareness month, Outcomes4Me is sharing related, helpful resources with our patient members.
When you receive a cancer diagnosis, you might feel like life stops. You have a new full-time job that requires your absolute attention: managing your care. You likely immediately think of those whom you hold most dear. How will your diagnosis affect your loved ones? And, as difficult as it is to consider, you worry about the “What ifs?” What if nothing is ever the same again? What if the treatment doesn’t work?
When you have minor children, aging parents you’re responsible for, and/or beloved pets–you need to make a plan for them in case your worst fears are realized. Making a plan doesn’t mean those fears will come to fruition, but it does mean that your wishes will be honored and you can set up a plan for care for those you loved if there comes a time when you’re no longer able to care for them yourself. Consult an estate attorney or a financial advisor who can help you understand your options more, including:
- Is long-term care insurance an option for yourself or your parents?
- How can you designate a guardian for your children and/or parents?
- Should you create a trust to ensure your dependents are financially supported?
You can also use an online resource such as Trust & Will to better understand your options. Trust & Will offers a variety of estate planning services.
