Looking ahead to SABCS 2024

Written By:

As I get ready to attend the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) this week, I’m feeling a mix of excitement, gratitude, and purpose. I’ve heard more than one oncologist refer to SABCS as “The Super Bowl of Breast Cancer,” and honestly, they’re not wrong. It’s a place where the latest research, life-changing data, and—most importantly—hope come together in one incredible event.

Over the next few days, I’ll have the privilege of meeting with top advocacy executives from major life sciences companies, serve as host to an incredible focus group of breast cancer survivors, and partner with a documentary-trained videographer to capture some truly inspiring patient stories.

These moments are the heartbeat of what we do at Outcomes4Me—ensuring that the voices and experiences of patients are seen, heard, and amplified. I’m also looking forward to spending quality time with the Outcomes4Me team, whose tireless dedication to empowering patients amazes me every single day.

The year since the last SABCS has been both deeply personal and challenging. It marked my first full year off a clinical trial therapy—a safety net that had provided comfort and reassurance. And this summer, a routine MRI raised concerns and led to a PET scan, FES PET scan, biopsy, and additional testing with Natera’s Signatera and Guardant’s Reveal to investigate a possible recurrence. Those weeks of testing and waiting were unsettling, but I’m profoundly grateful to still be NEAD (No Evidence of Active Disease) after it all.

It was a humbling reminder of the many patients who don’t receive such hopeful news and a stark acknowledgment of my privilege in accessing these advanced diagnostic tools. This week, I’m especially eager to connect with representatives from the companies behind these innovations to convey the immense gratitude patients like me feel for their work. These screenings offer precious peace of mind and treatment protocol guidance that many depend on.

What makes SABCS so remarkable is the sheer amount of new information and possibilities shared—new treatments, research study updates, and innovative ideas that bring us closer to cures and better quality of life for all patients. I’m thrilled that we’ll be able to bring some of these insights back to you.

Stay tuned for a special Ask the Expert webinar next week, where Dr. Steve Isakoff of MGH Cancer Center will walk us through the most significant findings from SABCS. He’ll break it all down into terms we, as patients, can understand because knowledge truly is power.

As we look ahead to this impactful week, I’m reminded of the incredible strength and resilience of the breast cancer community. Whether you’re a patient, a caregiver, a researcher, or an advocate, your voice and your contributions matter. Together, we’re shaping a future full of hope.

Here’s to an inspiring week ahead! ❤️
