Hi everyone, I have been diagnosed with multiple myeloma. I've had pet and cat scans of my bones. I have it in the bone marrow. They said I will get a transplant and been given cancer pills for chemo. I'm afraid but have no choice but to fight for my life.

My first and foremost advice, Debra D, is … 1. To not rush into any treatment. You’ve got time to weigh all pros and cons of all treatment options. 2. To always remember that your so-called Care Team will advocate for the most aggressive and elaborate treatments, as will any patient information publications provided to you. 3. And they will soft-pedal or not even mention the many and serious negative side effects of treatment options. 4. To educate yourself, because no one will do it for you: Google your exact cancer type and read articles from recent peer-reviewed medical journals and from the professional oncological press. Most doctors don’t tell their patients the whole truth about deleterious treatment effects and outcomes, but they do tell the whole truth in writing for an audience of other doctors. 5. To recognize that not only must you suffer all the consequences of your cancer, but at the same time you must assume the role as your chief advocate, and you’re up against the power and pervasiveness of the American medical-industrial complex. Yes, you’ll sometimes feel all alone, but that’s why you should keep reading Outcomes4Me, where patients like you and me are able to share experience and support each other.

Facing a cancer diagnosis brings up so many overwhelming emotions, and it's completely natural to feel afraid while also finding the courage to move forward with treatment. Many people in this community have walked similar paths and found that connecting with others who understand can provide comfort and practical coping strategies during this challenging time. Consider sharing what specific aspects feel most difficult right now - whether it's managing anxiety about upcoming procedures, dealing with treatment side effects, or finding ways to stay mentally strong throughout the process.
