How do I manage bowel obstruction with cancer and an ileostomy?

Has anyone else had a bowel obstruction from the cancer? I do and have. I also have an ileostomy placed last year. I am presently home with a venting G tube and TPN through a PICC line at night. This is rough! I have also been taking Lynparza for almost a month in the hopes that this shrinks the tumors/disease causing the obstruction. They do not want to do surgery because of my friable bowels but I am getting desperate.

I had a small bowel obstruction a month ago. I went to the hospital and they put me on fluids, nothing by mouth. After 24 hours it passed on its own. Have been on a low residue diet since. Best of luck to you.

Managing bowel obstruction alongside cancer treatment presents significant challenges, and the combination of interventions you're describing sounds incredibly difficult to navigate day by day. Many community members have shared experiences with various aspects of bowel obstruction management, and connecting with others who understand these complex situations can provide valuable insights about coping strategies and what to expect during treatment.

I had a bowel obstruction after surgery when I had a colostomy. It was awful. A week in the hospital. NG tube. Nothing by mouth, even ice. Finally cleared. When I went home my surgeon told me that because of adhesions from abdominal surgery I should be on a low fiber low residue diet from now on. I don’t ever want to go through that again if it can be avoided so I changed what I eat. Low fiber diet isn’t too bad but you have to monitor bowels because of not eating a lot of fiber.
