How to care for your skin during cancer radiation therapy

As you undergo radiation therapy, taking care of your skin becomes crucial. Radiation can cause various skin reactions, but with proper care, you can minimize discomfort and promote healing. Here’s how to protect your skin during treatment:

1) Be very gentle with your skin

Wash the treated area daily with lukewarm water and a mild, low-pH cleanser like Cetaphil or CeraVe. Use your hands instead of washcloths or sponges, which can irritate your skin. Pat your skin dry gently rather than rubbing it.

2) Moisturize regularly (like SO much)

Apply a moisturizer recommended by your care team daily, such as Miaderm or Benefene. This can help your skin recover more quickly from treatment. However, avoid applying moisturizer to any open wounds.

3) Wear loose, comfortable clothing

Choose soft, breathable fabrics such as cotton that won’t rub against your skin. Avoid tight-fitting clothes that may cause irritation. The moisturizers you use may stain these items so choose old pieces or consider thrifting for some to use during these weeks.

4) Protect your skin from the sun

Keep the treated area out of direct sunlight. When you’re outside, wear protective clothing and use a broad-spectrum gentle sunscreen like Suntegrity as recommended by your doctor. Additionally, seek shade when possible or bring an umbrella to protect you from the sun.

5)Avoid irritants

Skip antiperspirants, talcum powder, and fragranced products during treatment, as these can increase skin sensitivity. Also, don’t use heating pads or cold packs on the treated area.

6) Be careful when shaving

If you need to shave the treated area, use an electric razor to minimize skin irritation.

7) Products that may help

While individual responses may vary, some patients find relief with these products. Always consult your healthcare team before using any new skincare products during treatment:

  • Gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers like Aveeno or Vanicream
  • Aloe vera gel for its soothing properties
  • Calendula cream for its potential anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Manuka honey, Munukora is a stand out, for its wound-healing properties
  • Emu oil like Emu Joy, to soothe radiation-induced skin irritation
  • Hydrogel dressings for added moisture and protection, PowerHeal is one to try
  • Hypoallergenic, fragrance-free soaps such as Dove Sensitive Skin
  • Zinc oxide ointment, like Rugby, for its protective barrier
  • Vitamin E oil for its skin-repairing qualities, Majestic Pure is one option
  • Soothing oatmeal-based products like Aveeno Oatmeal Bath

Remember, everyone’s skin reacts differently to radiation therapy. What works for one person may not work for another. It’s essential to communicate with your healthcare team about any skin changes or concerns you experience during treatment. They can provide personalized advice and adjust your skincare routine as needed.

By taking good care of your skin, you can help minimize discomfort and support your body’s healing process throughout your radiation therapy journey.
