How an oncology social worker can help you

close up of hands offering support and encouragement

An oncology social worker (OSW) is a licensed counselor who’s there to help you and your loved ones who are affected by cancer. They have a Masters Degree in Social Work (MSW) and continuing education training in cancer care, so they can offer emotional and more practical support, helping you and your caregiver cope with life beyond the doctor’s office. Whether you need someone to talk to, help with paperwork, or assistance navigating a world overflowing with too much information, an oncology social worker can advocate for you and be there for you when you need them.

Your oncology social worker can help when you or your loved ones need:

A shoulder to lean on

An oncology social worker is there to listen and provide emotional support when you or your loved ones feel overwhelmed with anxiety, depression, or stress at any time. They’re an integral member of your care team and work closely with the rest of your providers to make sure you have the comprehensive, coordinated care you need. They’re trained to be with you every step and stage, from diagnosis to active treatment to survivorship (when you might need more guidance as you get back into your daily routine or go back to work.)

A liaison to your care team

Your cancer team is much bigger than you and your oncologist and requires a lot of close coordination starting on the day of your diagnosis. Your oncology social worker works closely with your care team to not only make sure you understand what’s going on, but also keeps the rest of your team in the loop on everything you’re feeling. This can be anything from side effects you may be experiencing from treatment, anxiety about your diagnosis, or hesitation about a recommendation and in need of reassurance.

A safe space to be yourself

When you’re talking to an oncology social worker, you’re in a judgment-free zone. They’re there to answer any questions or help you find the information you’re looking for. Feel free to talk to them about anything and remember that no question is a silly one. If you’re confused about something your doctor said or nervous about an upcoming treatment, they’re there to offer comfort and ensure you understand exactly what’s happening. Oncology social workers serve as an important guide during a challenging time in your life and health.

A catalyst to the community

Your oncology social worker is also there to connect you to others. They can recommend a support group in your local area or an online community program designed to connect you with others going through similar life events. Many hospitals and care centers also showcase direct links to national support groups online, like the virtual programs at Mayo Clinic and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. You can tap into these online forums from any state, anywhere.

A helpful resource

If you need help covering the cost of treatment and medications or have concerns about financial hardship, your oncology social worker may be able to connect you to the right financial resources. Health insurance can be difficult to navigate on top of a cancer diagnosis and there may be new therapies that could be recommended as part of your treatment plan. Ask your OSW if they can connect you with the right people to talk through any insurance challenges, overwhelming bill line items, and overall financial stress.

Whether it’s managing the stress of diagnosis, starting treatment, or planning for what’s next, oncology social workers are there to provide guidance and emotional support as you face every challenging stage of your cancer.
