Non-metastatic breast cancer refers to breast cancer that has not spread beyond the primary site of origin, typically the breast and the nearby lymph nodes. In other words, the cancer cells have not invaded distant organs or tissues. The term “non-metastatic” is often used interchangeably with “localized” or “early-stage” breast cancer.
The staging system is commonly used to categorize the extent of cancer spread. Stages 0, 1, 2, and some cases of Stage 3 breast cancer are considered non-metastatic or localized, meaning they are confined to the breast or have only spread to nearby lymph nodes.
The 5-year relative survival rate for women in the United States with non-metastatic invasive breast cancer is ~91%. The 10-year relative survival rate for women with non-metastatic invasive breast cancer is ~85%. It is important to note that many factors influence overall survival rates including the tumor risk group, treatment and lifestyle.
