What's active surveillance like for low-risk prostate cancer?

I have low-risk, Stage I prostate cancer and my doctor mentioned active surveillance as an option. From what I understand, this means regular monitoring with PSA tests, physical exams, and periodic biopsies instead of immediate treatment like surgery or radiation. The idea is to watch for any changes while avoiding potential side effects from treatment unless the cancer shows signs of getting worse. I'm trying to learn more about what this experience is really like from people who've been through it. If you've chosen active surveillance for similar prostate cancer: • What has the monitoring process been like for you day to day? • How do you manage any anxiety or concerns between check-ups? I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences or any insights that helped you along the way.

Active surveillance can feel overwhelming at first, but many people find that having a clear monitoring plan helps them feel more in control of their situation. The community here has shared valuable experiences about managing the emotional aspects of regular check-ups and finding ways to stay positive between appointments - hopefully others will share their insights with you about what the day-to-day experience has been like for them.

I completely agree that having a clear monitoring plan really does help with the anxiety, and you might also want to ask others here about what specific questions they found helpful to ask their doctors during those regular check-ups.

That's such a thoughtful suggestion - having that monitoring plan really does help with the uncertainty, and you might also want to ask others about practical tips they've found for managing scan anxiety or what questions they wish they'd asked their doctors early on.
