Okay, I’m going to shift gears and talk about the power of spicing. This is something I am passionate about. What inspired me was an article I saw by the American Institute for Cancer Research way back, just a few years into my career. It was titled “The Spices of Cancer Protection.” I was talking to an oncologist and thought to myself, with all the things being touted that don’t have much evidence to support them—all these supplements and products that are here today and gone tomorrow, and no one even keeps up with them—spices are so simple. It’s something that people already have in their pantries; we just have to change how they think about it, how they look at it, and empower them.

So I started to dive into the research. In just the last five years, there have been thousands of studies about the power of spicing. When it comes to potential anti-cancer mechanisms, there are tons of them, on multiple fronts.

Here are just five reasons to spice up your life: they contain anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, they could potentially help us fight cancer, they support our weight management goals, they definitely support our gut microbiome, and because they’re already a habit for us, if we’re consistent with it, we get to benefit from that cumulative effect over time. That’s the most important thing when it comes to nutritional interventions—how often and how consistent you’re going to be. That’s the difference maker. That’s why we focus on food first, not the fun little supplements that we obsess on.
