In this video, medical oncologist Dr. Jessica Lin shares the value of seeking a second opinion. She explains how another perspective can provide clarity and confirm next steps.

The following response has been lightly edited for grammatical purposes.

Transcript:

Dr. Jessica Lin: In the oncology community, we always encourage second opinions. We’re always communicating with each other and asking other oncologists for thoughts and input for your care. You should feel empowered to ask for second opinions and get consultations, particularly when you’re initially diagnosed with lung cancer, but also during the course of treatment. If you need to change therapy or are at a challenging point in your cancer therapy, it’s always good to consider a second opinion.

Another reason that second opinions and consultations are really important: every center will have a slightly different or dramatically different clinical trial portfolio. Not all centers will have the same range of clinical trials open. This is why consultations at other academic centers can be incredibly helpful.
