Cheers to summer: 3 refreshing alcohol-free spritzes

June 18, 2026

Group of people celebrating toasting with drinks

Summer is the perfect time to cool off with a refreshing drink, but if you’re living with cancer, it’s important to choose beverages that not only taste good but also support your well-being. Whether you’re staying hydrated during treatment, looking for alternatives to alcohol, or simply wanting something special to sip on a warm day, these non-alcoholic summer spritzes offer a delicious way to celebrate the season.

One important note: if you’re experiencing mouth sores (oral mucositis), a common side effect of some cancer treatments, you may want to avoid drinks that contain acidic ingredients or spice. These ingredients can irritate sensitive tissues and make eating and drinking uncomfortable.

Below, you’ll find three refreshing, alcohol-free summer spritzes that are easy to make and can be adapted to fit your individual needs and preferences.

1. Elderflower mint spritz

Light, floral, and refreshing, this elderflower mint spritz is a summer classic. Fresh mint adds a burst of brightness, while elderflower brings a subtle sweetness.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Add the mint leaves to a glass and gently muddle to release their flavor.
  2. Fill the glass with ice.
  3. Pour in the elderflower syrup and lemon juice.
  4. Top with club soda and stir gently to combine.
  5. Garnish with additional mint leaves, if desired, and serve immediately.

Note: If you have mouth sores, omit the lemon juice.

2. Non-alcoholic “Bloody Mary” spritz

Inspired by the flavors of a fresh summer garden, this savory spritz combines ripe tomatoes, cilantro, and sparkling water for a unique twist on a traditional mocktail. The chili lime salt adds a tangy kick, making it a great option for those who enjoy bold flavors.

Ingredients

  • 2-3 Roma tomatoes
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp chili lime salt, or to taste
  • 4 oz sparkling water or a non-alcoholic beer
  • 2 sprigs of fresh cilantro
  • Ice

Directions

  1. Blend the Roma tomatoes and cilantro until smooth.
  2. Pour the blended tomatoes through a fine-mesh sieve into a bowl or measuring cup. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes to allow the liquid to strain through.
  3. Fill a glass with ice.
  4. Add the strained tomato juice, lemon juice, and chili lime salt. Stir well.
  5. Top with sparkling water and stir gently.
  6. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve chilled.

Note: If you have mouth sores, consider skipping this recipe.

3. Watermelon raspberry spritz

Sweet watermelon and tart raspberry come together in this fruity, bubbly refresher. It’s hydrating light, and easy to make.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Fill a glass with ice.
  2. Add the watermelon juice, raspberry jam, and lemon juice.
  3. Stir well until the jam is fully incorporated.
  4. Top with sparkling water and gently stir.
  5. Serve immediately with a watermelon wedge or fresh raspberries, if desired.

Note: If you have mouth sores, you may want to skip the lemon juice and use additional watermelon juice instead.
